Volunteer

Each year, hundreds of parents, grandparents and alumni give of their time and talents to St. Andrew’s.

The school relies on these volunteers to keep our community connected, to mobilize resources to support our mission, to enrich student and parent learning through speaking or other educational opportunities, and to advise the Administration.

There are several volunteer opportunities available for yearly events, activities, and committees organized by the St. Andrew’s Parent Association (SAPA), as well as programs organized by faculty and staff that are in need of volunteer support. Learn more about these opportunities below.

Volunteer for Division Events

  • Lower School

    LS Holiday Concert
    This evening event includes student performances with school tradition of holiday treats before and after the show. Volunteers are needed for making St. Andrew's famous shortbreads and peppermint bark, set-up, decorations and selling items the night of the event.

    LS Family Heritage Night
    Lower School families have the opportunity to celebrate and share their heritage by hosting tables featuring photographs, art, maps and food from the country, state or region they are representing. Volunteers are needed to help organize and promote the event, and to set-up, clean-up and provide support during the event.

    LS Book Fair
    The Lower School puts on a week-long Book Fair in collaboration with Scholastic Books where parents can purchase books for their children and for the classrooms. Volunteers are needed to set-up, clean-up, and work shifts at the Book Fair.

    LS Young Authors and Artists Week
    Literature and Art are celebrated in this week-long event by the Lower School. A children's author will visit, parents will be invited to morning Tea events where students showcase their own creative skills, and a used book drive is ongoing throughout the week. Volunteers are needed to help organize and promote the events and to provide support during the events. Volunteers are also needed to help with decorating and hanging artwork.

  • Middle School

    MS/US Spring Visual Art Show
    Assist the Visual Arts department in preparing the MS/US Spring Art Show. The committee will meet 2-3 times before the exhibit to plan, set up, and identify judges for the show. No experience or art skills required!

    Performing Arts
    Support the Middle School Musical in May by helping with costumes, props, programs, ticket sales and/or refreshments.

  • Upper School

    Upper School BBQ for Students
    This October event is a wonderful culmination to Spirit Week for US students and on the eve of Homecoming weekend. Volunteers are needed to assist in set-up and clean-up.

    MS/US Spring Visual Art Show

    Performing Arts
    Support the performing arts by helping with costumes, props, programs, ticket sales and/or refreshments. Volunteers are needed to help with the drama performance in October or the musical performance in February.

  • Homecoming

    Held in October, Homecoming is a day that celebrates school spirit with a walk that supports the homeless in the DC area, followed by sporting events, food, games and fun for the whole family. Volunteers are needed to assist in monitoring various areas in manageable shifts during the celebration.

  • Grandparents and Special Friends Day

    Grandparents and Special Friends Day brings grandparents and special friends to the school for a morning of classes and chapel service. Volunteers are needed to help with set-up, check-in, and serving breakfast.

  • St. Andrew's for the Holidays

    Help St. Andrew’s prepare for the holiday season by decorating the campus in holiday style! Share in the great tradition of baking our famous shortbread cookies and peppermint bark and prepare them for holiday sales. These and other items are available for purchase just in time for the holidays!

  • Fund-a-Scholar Gala

    St. Andrew's annual Fund-A-Scholar Gala takes place annually in March. Please contact Ana Naab for more information on this community event. The event features an online silent auction, LIVE auction and a community dinner. Assistance will be needed with the solicitation of items, marketing, and/or decorations.

  • Project Red Balloon

    In mid-March, help welcome newly enrolled families into the St. Andrew's community by decorating their mailboxes with SAES balloons. This one-day activity is full-on fun and it's the perfect way to show your school spirit! Date is TBD.

  • Flower Mart at Washington National Cathedral

    Held the first Friday and Saturday in May at Washington National Cathedral. St. Andrew's parents share in the tradition of ticket sales at the antique carousel.

Volunteer for Year Round Committees

  • Done in a Day

    This program provides parents with unpredictable schedules the perfect opportunity to volunteer on a one-time basis. From administrative tasks, to mailing help, to set-up/clean-up/participation for events or take home projects, there are many ways to lend a hand and show your support for the school.

  • Campus Kitchen

    Parent drivers needed! Each Tuesday during the school year, a group of dedicated upper school student leaders and 9th graders come together weekly to prepare meals for food insecure neighbors at Bethesda Cares. On Wednesday, parents drive the meals to Bethesda Cares for their daily meal program. Across the ten years of this program, thousands of hot meals and bag lunches have been shared with our Bethesda Cares neighbors.

  • Faculty/Staff Appreciation

    Help us show the faculty and staff of our great school how much we appreciate them. This committee produces various small events throughout the year, including Teacher Appreciation Week. Responsibilities may include planning, cooking/baking, decorations, crafts, and set up/clean up.

  • Lions Fund Grade Captains

    This volunteer opportunity offers the chance for fun, a little competition and a HUGE impact on every student's experience at St. Andrew's. The Lions Fund Class Captains work during our two annual giving drives of the year, one in December and one in May to solicit fellow parents in their grade for gifts to the Lions Fund. Our goal is always 100% parent participation in our annual giving program and this role helps us reach our goal.

  • Parent to Parent

    Build connections among parents through various community events. Volunteers help to plan and organize events throughout the year.

  • School Store

    The School Store sells school supplies and spirit items. Volunteers assist with sales in the store and inventory on an as-needed basis.

  • Student Center Cafe

    The Student Center Cafe is looking for up to two parent volunteers to work Friday afternoons from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and some Wednesday mornings from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

  • Bokamoso

    St. Andrew's students experience a transformative cross-cultural exchange through our partnership with the Bokamoso Life Centre in Winterfeldt, South Africa. Volunteers are needed to help support the Bokamoso brunch fundraiser in January and/or host a South African student during their visit to St. Andrew's in January.

  • SAPA Leadership

    St. Andrew's Parent Association (SAPA) is organized to promote, support, and enhance the total school program. One of the many ways we do this is by volunteering for an Executive Committee position, an event committee chair, or grade level representative.     Volunteers play a vital role in the alumni community. They are instrumental in keeping class members in contact with the school and with one another, and in supporting the many events, programs, and initiatives of the Alumni Association.
